The European Union Delegation to Singapore issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission and the Embassy of Switzerland:

The European Union (EU) and Switzerland call on the Cabinet to grant clemency to 32 year old Malaysian Kho Jabing. The EU, its Member States and Switzerland continue to call on the Singaporean authorities to adopt a moratorium on executions.

Whilst the EU and Switzerland do not refute the seriousness of the crime, they hold a principled position against the death penalty and are opposed to the use of capital punishment under any circumstances. The death penalty has not been shown in any way to act as a deterrent to crime. Furthermore, any errors - inevitable in any legal system - are irreversible. The EU and Switzerland will continue in their pursuit of the abolition of the death penalty worldwide.

The EU and Switzerland join all of those who have asked for a review of Singapore's current policy on the death penalty.
