The SDC’s engagement
Despite this potential, Myanmar faces major challenges. It needs to address its internal conflicts and join the global market economy quickly to ensure sustainable growth.
The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), the Human Security Division (HSD) and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) are working together with this aim in mind. Swiss development cooperation contributes to four main areas:
- employment and the development of professional skills
- agriculture and food security
- health, social services
- the promotion of local governance and peace
Swiss development cooperation also takes account of good governance, climate change, gender issues, gender equality and disaster risk reduction in its assistance. In all its activities, it pays particular attention to vulnerable groups such as internally displaced persons, refugees, returnees, children and land mine victims. The budget for Swiss development cooperation in Myanmar in 2014 (SDC and HSD) is CHF 21.75 million.
