Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin signs free trade agreement with Kosovo

Press releases, 22.01.2025

On 22 January on the margins of the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Federal Councillor Guy Parmelin and representatives of Switzerland’s fellow EFTA states Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway signed a free trade agreement with Kosovo, represented by Rozeta Hajdari, Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship and Trade. Prime Minister Albin Kurti was also present at the signing ceremony.

The agreement between the states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and the Republic of Kosovo largely resembles other free trade agreements (FTAs) that EFTA has recently concluded with third countries. It has a comprehensive sectoral scope and includes provisions on trade in goods, technical barriers to trade, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, trade facilitation, trade in services, the protection of intellectual property, competition, trade and sustainable development, as well as legal and horizontal provisions.

In concluding the FTA with Kosovo, Switzerland is continuing its successful free trade policy and thereby strengthening the competitiveness of its economy. At the same time, it will continue its support for Kosovo's economic reforms and the country's integration into the structures of economic cooperation at European and international level.

The bilateral trade volume between Switzerland and Kosovo of around CHF 140 million (2023) has further development potential. The FTA now also opens up broad market access and improves the legal framework and predictability for economic players.
