Morocco IFRC Emergency Appeal Earthquake

An earthquake with a 6.8 magnitude shook Morocco on 8 September. This earthquake was the deadliest in Morocco since 2004. At least 3’000 people were killed, mostly in Marrakech and the provinces in the High Atlas Mountains, while another 5’600 were injured. The SDC will support the victims of the earthquake with a contribution to the IFRC Appeal. 

North Africa Cultural Programme (NACP), Phase 1

By developing a Regional Cultural Programme, Switzerland seeks to facilitate intercultural dialogue and exchange as a foundation for peace and conflict sensitive development in North Africa and to foster artistic expression as a driver of change in support to the challenges of transition. This will promote peaceful coexistence, political stability and social cohesion in North Africa, hence providing a contribution to the prevention of violent extremism and alternatives for the fulfillment of North African youth in their own societies.

Originally conceived to support the development of activities under the Swiss North Africa Programme launched from scratch in 2011, the 5^th phase with a much reduced budget allows deepening relevant thematic and context knowledge, developing and formulating future strategic priorities and setting-up adapted or new projects for SDC in a fragile and complex environment. For 2015-16 the focus is on preparatory work for the Swiss North Africa programme 2017-20.

First Allocation of SDC Funding to ICRC Operations in 2013 in Tunisia and Yemen

In line with the Good Humanitarian Donorship (GHD) principles, Switzerland recognizes the necessity of predictable and flexible funding for responding to changing needs in humanitarian crises. SDC funding to ICRC operations allows the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to respond proactively and to provide immediate protection and assistance for people affected by armed conflict and other situations of violence.

Die Volksaufstände in Nordafrika anfangs 2011 richteten sich nicht zuletzt auch gegen die Sicherheitskräfte, welche die diktatorischen Regimes in Ägypten, Libyen und Tunesien über Jahrzehnte stützten. Entsprechend ist die Neuorientierung der bewaffneten Staatsgewalten – Armee, Polizei und Sicherheitsdienste – eine vordringliche Aufgabe im Hinblick auf eine erfolgreiche demokratische Transition. Die Schweiz verfügt mit dem Genfer Zentrum für die zivile Kontrolle von Streit- und Sicherheitskräften (DCAF) über international anerkannte Expertise. Seit 2011 werden die Partnerländer auf Anfrage rasch und gezielt im Prozess zur Reform des Sicherheitssektors unterstützt. Dabei präsentieren sich die Herausforderungen in Tunesien, Marokko, Libyen und Ägypten trotz aller Gemeinsamkeiten recht unterschiedlich.
