Climate & Socially Resilient Livelihoods’ Support (CSRLS)


The climatic challenges exacerbate Afghanistan's already fragile socio-economic condition. The project by the Afghan NGO, The Liaison Office, aims to sustainably improve lives and livelihoods of the poorest households in selected provinces by strengthening the natural resource base, climate change resilient and diversified livelihoods, relationships within and between communities, as well as joint climate action.

Contesto Due to geographic, political, economic and social factors, Afghanistan is among the most vulnerable countries in the world to the impacts of climate change. The country is severely affected by rising temperatures and unseasonal precipitation impacting agricultural productivity, food security and livelihoods, especially of the poorest households. The degradation of natural resources rises conflicts within and between communities. Further, communities and stakeholders interact very little on the importance of longer-term development cooperation for climate change adaptation.
Obiettivi Sustainably improved lives and livelihoods of women and men of the poorest households in selected districts of Loya-Paktia region and Daikundi Province.
Gruppi target The project will reach out to over 12,925 of the poorest houselholds in selected districts of Loya-Paktia region and Daikundi Province.
Effetti a medio termine
  1. Natural resources substantially improved and sustainably managed by communities.
  2. Livelihoods sustainably diversified and climate-change resilient.
  3. Relationships within and between communities sustainably improved.
  4. Local communities effectively linked to environment related local, district, provincial and national level authorities, and to national NGOs and international stakeholders.
Risultati

Risultati principali attesi:  

1.1 Community-based natural resource management associations functional and sustainably managing their improved natural resources (NR)
1.2 Natural Resource Management (NRM) related cash for work compensates the poorest households for losses due to NR protection measures

2.1 Reduced need of cooking and heating fuel from the NR base
2.2 Reduced losses of assets and agricultural production due to droughts and flash floods
2.3 Reduced risk to livelihoods due to diversified income generating activities
2.4 Improved productivity of livestock in targeted communities
2.5 Increased income through Market Systems Development (MSD) such as local addition of value and market linkages
2.6 Development and implementation of community-based disaster risk reduction (DRR) and climate change adaptation plans

3.1 Members of NRM associations trained in the resolution of NR and natural disasters related conflicts

4.1 Federations of NRM associations formed at district, and provincial levels, and effectively interacting on climate change, DRR and NRM challenges
4.2 The Afghan NGOs Climate and Environment Coordination Platform (CECOP) of all relevant stakeholders is functioning well at national level
