Press releases, 03.11.2021

At its meeting on 3 November 2021, the Federal Council set the date for the entry into force of the Federal Act on the Processing of Personal Data by the FDFA. The Act was adopted by Parliament on 18 December 2020 and provides a clear legal framework and helps to meet current technological and societal challenges.

The aim of this Act, which was adopted by Parliament on 18 December 2020 and replaces existing legislation, is to adapt the legal framework to the practices that are essential for the fulfilment of the FDFA's tasks (consular activities, host state policy, organisation of international conferences, etc.) and to enable them to be carried out in a modern and efficient manner. Its entry into force will not create any new activities or processing of data.

The Act will increase the predictability of the processing of data required for Switzerland's foreign policy while providing the necessary democratic legitimacy. It will thus strengthen the public's confidence in its institutions.
