Official visits by heads of mission to cantonal authorities are neither obligatory nor customary. While Swiss cantons are sovereign and may receive guests according to their own criteria, visits by heads of mission to the cantons are subject to certain provisions. The conferring of decorations or titles by a diplomatic mission on a Swiss citizen is also subject to certain rules.
