Expert seminar on Global Governance

The seminar is part of the Global Redesign Initiative, a global, inter-disciplinary multi-stakeholder dialogue launched by the World Economic Forum at the beginning of this year. Prompted by the current financial and economic crisis, its purpose is to analyse and question existing global structures and processes and to develop new concepts for a lasting global governance architecture. Switzerland, Qatar and Singapore are the patrons of this initiative. 

About 100 representatives of governments, international organisations, NGOs, universities, think tanks and the private sector sought together answers to the question of what kind of global institutions are needed to master the challenges of the 21st century while at the same time satisfying demands for more representative decision-making processes. The discussion focused on the role of the UN and on relevant experience from multi-stakeholder initiatives such as the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria and the UN Global Compact. The results of the seminar will be incorporated in the recommendation of the final report of the  Global Redesign Initiative, which will be published at a conference in Doha, Qatar, at the end of April 2010. 

The seminar was opened by founder and president of the WEF Professor Klaus Schwab, ambassador and head of FDFA Political Affairs Division III Alexandre Fasel and  ILO Director General Juan Somavia. Speakers and panellists included Lord Malloch-Brown, former top UN official and Minister for Africa, Asia and the UN in Gordon Brown's government, WHO Director General Margaret Chan and Peter Maurer, Swiss ambassador to the UN in New York.
