Bern, Press releases, 14.12.2009

On 14 December 2009, Federal Councillor Micheline Calmy-Rey, Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), received the Georgian Foreign Minister, Grigol Vashadze, for an official working visit in Von-Wattenwyl-Haus in Bern. The talks covered among other matters bilateral relations and the situation in Georgia.

The focus of the bilateral issues under discussion was the development of political and economic relations, in particular activities in the fields of technical and economic cooperation, as well as new bilateral agreements and scientific cooperation. A second focal point of the talks was Switzerland’s representation of Georgian diplomatic and consular interests in Russia since March this year.

The talks also addressed the two countries’ respective positions in the areas of international cooperation, for example within the OSCE and their relations with the EU, as well as Georgia’s relations with its neighbours and questions concerning energy in the Southern Caucasus.

The two ministers also discussed the activities and the role of the Council of Europe in Georgia. In mid-November, Switzerland took over the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for a six-month period. The talks were rounded off with a discussion on international and multilateral issues.
