Arrest of a human rights activist in China

Switzerland is concerned about the formal arrest on 24 June 2009 of the human rights activist Liu Xiaobo, who has been in detention since December 2008. He is one of the signatories of the Charter 2008, which calls on China to continue the process of political reform.

For Switzerland, freedom of expression is one of the fundamental elements of human rights and must be respected at all times. Switzerland calls on the Chinese government to ensure that Liu Xiaobo has the right to a fair trial and to be represented by a lawyer of his choice.
