The FDFA considers the dissolution of the constitutional Court and the decision to govern by decrees and ordinances as acts that imperil democratic achievements and stability in Niger. Furthermore it deplores the restrictions imposed on private sector media and on freedom of expression. The FDFA calls on those responsible to respect the Constitution and the rule of law. It also calls on the civil society of Niger to show restraint and to work for the good of the country.
Among the world’s poorest nations, Niger has been designated a priority country by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), which operates programmes worth around CHF 12 million a year, aimed at decentralisation and local governance, rural development, education and training. The FDFA will review bilateral relations and development cooperation programmes with the authorities of Niger in the light of the changing situation.
There are around 40 Swiss citizens registered as resident in Niger.
