Bern, Press releases, 13.01.2010

President Doris Leuthard today greeted representatives of the diplomatic corps in Switzerland at the traditional New Year’s reception at the Federal Palace.

The greetings of the foreign heads of mission were conveyed by the doyen of the diplomatic corps, Monsignor Francesco Canalini, Papal Nuncio in Switzerland. Diplomats from some 125 states were in attendance.

In her speech, President Doris Leuthard cited three key challenges facing Switzerland in the year ahead: firstly the need for a reliable financial architecture to overcome the financial crisis, secondly, suitable measures to address rising unemployment, and thirdly, an open debate on our attitudes to the various religions in Switzerland and the integration of migrants. The President also stated that other crises and conflicts around the world should not be forgotten because of the economic crisis and underlined Switzerland's clear commitment to its many international engagements lined up in 2010.
