In view of the importance of the tasks and the major role played by the MPP in international public health, the Federal Council decided on the basis of the Host State Act to afford the organisation a special status by concluding an agreement on privileges and immunities. In terms of its content, the agreement corresponds to other agreements the Federal Council has concluded with similar organisations.
Based in Geneva, the MPP works to improve access for people in low- and middle-income countries high quality, safe, effective and affordable HIV, hepatitis C and tuberculosis medicines. To meet the urgent need for affordable medicines, the MPP has developed an innovative, voluntary patent pooling mechanism based on the conclusion of licensing agreements with patent holders and sub-licensing agreements with manufacturers of generic medicines. Over the past eight years, the MPP's partners have delivered five billion doses of medicine.
The agreement on privileges and immunities secures the MPP's long-term presence in Geneva, reinforces the city's position as a public-health hub and – crucially – facilitates collaboration among the various stakeholders in the field of public health.
