Press releases, 14.12.2023

Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider and Federal Councillor Ignazio Cassis received Tunisian Foreign Affairs and Migration Minister Nabil Ammar in Bern for a courtesy visit on 14 December. Talks with Ms Baume-Schneider, head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP), focused on migration issues. The meeting with Ignazio Cassis, the head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), focused on foreign policy developments in the region.

With around 530 asylum applications in 2022, Tunisia is the 10th most important country of origin. However, as a transit country on the central Mediterranean route, Tunisia is an important partner for Switzerland in the area of asylum and migration. The two countries have maintained a broad migration partnership since 2012, which includes a migration agreement to determine the modalities of return and an agreement on the exchange of young professionals.

During the meeting with Tunisian Foreign Affairs Minister Nabil Ammar, Federal Councillor Baume-Schneider emphasised the need to deepen this good cooperation and pursue a coordinated approach in view of the migration-related challenges facing both countries. The head of the FDJP stated that cooperation in the area of return is currently working well, which was also important for Switzerland. The two ministers also exchanged views on judicial cooperation.

Respect for international law

In view of the current situation in the Middle East, the head of the FDFA and his Tunisian counterpart discussed foreign policy challenges in the MENA (Middle East and Northern Africa) region. Mr Cassis expressed his concern about the regional impact of the conflict. Switzerland condemns the terrorist attacks against Israel carried out by Hamas and is working in the UN Security Council to ensure respect for international law and rapid humanitarian support for the Palestinian civilian population. Federal Councillor Cassis emphasised the need for a sustainable political solution to the Middle East conflict. Cooperation with all key players in the region is essential in that regard.

Tunisia is a priority country for Switzerland in terms of international cooperation. The two foreign ministers discussed cooperation in the fields of economic affairs, governance and migration.
