Burkina Faso: two Swiss citizens among the victims

A large number of people were killed and injured in terrorist attacks on a hotel and restaurant in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso) on Friday night. Two Swiss citizens were also among the victims. Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter, head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA), strongly condemns the attacks and wishes to express his deepest sympathies to the relatives of the victims.

Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter met his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Friday in Beijing as part of the political dialogue between Switzerland and China. At this sixth round of talks since the dialogue between the two countries began in 2007, the agenda included the development of bilateral relations at the political, economic and financial levels, as well as an exchange of views on key foreign policy issues.


Swiss ambassador appointed OSCE special representative for the South Caucasus

The Chairperson-in-Office of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has appointed Swiss Ambassador Günther Bächler as the special representative for the South Caucasus during Germany's chairmanship of the OSCE. He took up the post of special representative on 1 January 2016 upon Germany's assumption of the chairmanship. The Federal Council yesterday reconferred the title of ambassador on Mr Bächler.

Die Schweiz beteiligt sich am Programm zur Umverteilung von 40‘000 schutzbedürftigen Personen, das die Europäische Union (EU) im Juli beschlossen hat, unter der Voraussetzung, dass die Dublin-Verpflichtungen eingehalten werden. Der Bundesrat hat am Freitag entschieden, bis zu 1500 dieser Personen aufzunehmen, die in Italien und Griechenland bereits registriert wurden. Die Schweiz leistet damit einen weiteren Beitrag zu einem gemeinsamen solidarischen Vorgehen in Europa,. Parallel dazu wird die Hilfe vor Ort im Zusammenhang mit den Krisen in Syrien, Irak und dem Horn von Afrika um 70 Millionen Franken aufgestockt. Mit diesem Kredit werden auch die Bemühungen der Schweiz für eine politische Lösung im Syrien-Konflikt unterstützt.


Federal Council approves the 2015 Foreign Policy Report

The Federal Council approved the 2015 Foreign Policy Report at its meeting on 13 January 2016. The report provides an overview of Swiss foreign policy and gives an account of Switzerland's most important foreign policy activities in 2015. This year's report features a chapter on Switzerland's commitment to human rights and international humanitarian law.

On his first trip abroad in 2016, Federal Councillor Didier Burkhalter will travel to The Hague on Thursday to meet with Foreign Minister Bert Koenders with whom he will mainly discuss relations between Switzerland and the European Union (EU), presided over by the Netherlands in the first half of 2016. The head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs FDFA will then go directly to Beijing on Friday where he and his counterpart Wang Yi are to discuss relations between Switzerland and China, a key partner for Switzerland outside Europe.
